I. Journey to Tuva and Lake Baikal,
Russia via Seoul, Korea, Ulan Bator and the trans-Siberian Railway (Year
to be Announced)
We will begin our journey in Irkutsk, Siberia, the
geographical center of Asia. This will be reached by air, via Seoul, Korea
and Ulan Bator, Mongolia. Upon arrival we are warmly welcomed and transferred
to our hotel at Listvyanka village located on Lake Baikal for a well deserved
rest. We will then spend the next 3 days exploring Irkutsk, the village
and Lake Baikal.
Lake Baikal, known as the "Pearl of Siberia" is a crystal clear
body of water surrounded by mountains and tree covered cliffs. Lake Baikal
was formed during the Palaeogene period of the earth dating back 25-30
million years ago. It is the oldest and largest fresh water lake in the
world. It has as much water as the five great lakes together. The water
is so pristine and clear that fish can be seen 30-40-m below the surface.
Lake Baikal's exceptionally mineral free waters support an unusual population
of organisms including many species found no where else on earth. Some
of the plants and animals date back to prehistoric time. Rich with oxygen
it helps preserve life.
Irkutsk, pop 595,000, is a cosmopolitan city filled with beautiful churches
and grand 19th C. architecture. It is eastern Siberia's trading center.
From here, Siberian furs and ivory were sent to Mongolia, Tibet and China
in exchange for silk and tea. We will swim in the lake, enjoy a lecture
from local research scientists and explore the local market place.
An early morning flight gets us to Kyzyl, the Capital City of Tuva. Upon
arrival we are welcomed in the traditional Tuvan style and the transferred
to our Bi Khem, a typical yurt complex with many western comforts, 18km
outside of Kyzyl. This will be our main headquarters for the following
week. From here we will experience day trips. First we will explore Kyzyl
and the Shamanic Clinic there. The next few days we will travel to the
majestic cedar taiga (forest) including a journey to Mt Khayrakan (sacred
Bear Mountain) and the "Seven Sisters", sacred larch tree site.
We will meet Tatiana the director of the Chaadan Clinic and learn more
about shamanic healing, Buddhism and the culture of Tuva.
The Taiga tour continues with a journey to the beautiful and holy Lake
Taiga located 1520m. above sea level. The warm temperatures of the lake
in the summer make it a paradise for lake swimmers. In the afternoon we
will enjoy the experience of "Phytosauna" a restoration procedure
like a sauna with an herbal steam. There will be a talk about medicinal
mountain herbs. The evening will conclude with a throat singing concert
and demonstration at the Yurt Complex.
The next day we will journey by bus to sacred petroglyph archeological
sites, with an afternoon excursion to a traditional Tuvan horse yurt ranch,
where we will have the opportunity to go horseback riding.
Our final day will be visiting bazaars in Kyzyl, with visits to local
stone carving artisans.
We will then fly back to Irkutsk and then transfer to the railway station
to board the incredible Trans-Siberian Train journey to Ulan Bator, the
capitol of Mongolia We will spend two nights aboard the train. What a
wonderful way to experience Siberia, in the comforts of the rail, we see
rural life, a medieval scene relived. Our journey continues to the great
nation state of Mongolia.
We will spend the last days of our journey in a comfortable hotel, enjoying
tours of Buddhist Temples, local market places and art galleries before
flying home.
